  1. This is Lem Ward (1908-1942), a Philadelphia-born actor and director. He was an early student of Jasper Deeter at the Hedgerow Theater in Rose Valley, PA. Later he founded the Philadelphia Marionette Theatre and also the New Theatre of Philadelphia. He went on to work with the Federal Theatre Project, including in its circus division, but he was also well-known for directing “One Third of a Nation.” He died at age 36 of pneumonia.
